I have been involved in dog obedience training since 1976, training my first dog; an OES mix to the novice level. As an active member of the Dog Obedience Training Club of Rochester NY from 1980 thru 1990, I served as a club officer, trial trophy chairman and obedience instructor. In search of more precise and motivational training methods; I attended obedience seminars from competitive instructors such as Diane Bauman, Ruth Rosbach, the Volhards, Janet Lewis, Janice DeMello and Sandra Ladwig, to name a few.
In 1992 I became a student of Debra Zappia and have remained her student gaining unparalleled knowledge and skill for high level AKC obedience and USA Schutzhund competition. I have had many years of training with Gene England, a tremendous tracking and police dog trainer; learning how to read a dogs tracking behavior and instill a strong foundation for high level Schutzhund style tracking.
In the past, I have instructed 4H dog obedience for Wayne County NY. Currently, I have several private students and ongoing small group competition obedience classes. I am a member of The United Schutzhund Clubs of America and The Empire Working Dog Club.
Through out these many years I have trained and competed with different breeds in AKC/CKC Obedience and USA Schutzhund/IPO. With each dog I strive to accomplish a higher level of expertise than the last. To date we have attained the AKC OTCH, CKC OTCH, UDX, OM1, AKC TD, BH, AD, SchH3, IPO3, FH1, FH2 as well as received a V rating and Kkl1a in GSD conformation! My last 2 competition partners; GSD's Dena and Gino have won many AKC HIT's & HC's. Both dogs earned invitations to compete in the AKC National Obedience Championship, both dogs qualified 2 years in a row by number of OTCH points earned. Dena in 2005 & 2006 and Gino in 2014 & 2015! It was a great honor to show Gino this year (2014) at the AKC NOC and to land in 17th place overall out of 127 dogs entered! He qualified all 12 runs over the grueling 2 days of competition earning 1369.5 points out of a possible 1420 points total! Showing his talents for work, Gino first competed in the Sport of SchH/IPO earning his SchH1,2,3 and IPO3, FH1, FH2 before going over to the AKC ring! He competed in 3 National SchH Championships and 3 Regional SchH Championships before retiring from that venue after the 2011 Regional Championship. I am now working with another wonderful GSD boy, Jago who has already earned his AD, BH, IPO1,2 & 3! We are now focused on getting him prepared for this years Regional and National Championships.
I savor the relationship and bond I develop with my own dogs as we explore learning together. Helping others to realize their dogs fullest potential is also a very gratifying experience!
